Column

Tyana is a Licensed Professional Counselor who sees adults in individual and family counseling. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Southern University at New Orleans. She completed her graduate studies at Loyola University at New Orleans where she earned a Master of Science in Counseling in 2002.

Tyana has worked in mental health since 1999, beginning with DePaul Tulane Behavioral Health Center. She later worked at River Oaks Hospital as the admissions counselor for the Eating Disorders and Trauma programs. Her work experience includes inpatient, outpatient, and community mental health settings. Currently, Tyana maintains a private practice in Homewood. Her areas of expertise include relationship struggles, depression, eating disorders, grief, and loss.  She is certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples and individuals (EFIT). Within this model, developed by Sue Johnson, regulation of painful and frightening emotions are explored and processed to gain emotional strength and safety in one's self and in meaningful relationships with others.

Tyana believes her role as a therapist is to foster growth and encourage awareness in her client’s life.

What is Emotionally Focused therapy for couples?

EFT is about moving couples from rigid patterns of engagement, or “knots” to openness and flexibility. This is done by untangling those “knots” and find the threads of connection between the couple to build a strong attachment bond. Together the couple will gain clarity, trust each other’s good intentions, and co-create a shared story of one another and who they are relationally.

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy with Individuals?

EFIT is based on the Attachment Theory. Safe connections with key others, a sense of belonging and an emotional connection helps set the tone for attachment security. We are wired for connection and have the capacity to grow but we can get stuck in chaotic, reactive emotions or rigid shutting down. These protective patterns can lead to distress individually and relationally. The goal of EFIT is to increase awareness of reactive strategies, as well as fears and vulnerabilities. With that increased awareness we can explore key relationships, expand our emotional awareness, and move towards a coherent narrative of self and others.
