Process Control: From Rotolog to ‘Hands-Free’ Rotomolding Control

The basics of process control for rotational molding have now been well established and their use continues to grow as machines and final product demands become more critical. This course covers the essential elements of process control, the systems available and the knowledge can be applied for best advantage. Some of the areas covered include:

  • Optimizing material properties – defining the process window for rotomolding
  • Controlling final product quality in terms of strength and dimensions
  • Balancing production cycles
  • Adjusting processes for changes in ambient (seasonal) conditions
  • Process control systems from all the various suppliers worldwide
  • Latest non-contact thermometry in the IRT system from Ferry Industries, Inc.
  • How to use IRT for ‘hands-free’ rotomolding
  • Correlating IRT with Rotolog and managing production and part dimensions

Duration: This is a half-day seminar with around 3-4 hours of instruction.

Group Size: Ideal group is 7-12 people for best interaction. Larger groups can be accommodated (up to 20 or more) if required but interaction will be reduced.

Hands-On Workshop at Penn College, Williamsport, Pennsylvania

The Hands-On Workshop at Penn College is an annual event aimed at providing attendees with practical information and a chance to see the connection between material preparation, molding parameters and final part properties.

The next course is due to be held in May at the Williamsport Campus. Registration details can be seen at the Penn College website: External link opens in new tab or windowhttp://www.pct.edu/pirc/course.asp?category=PLASTICS&course=PMC217

The program is a mix of classroom and workshop training, including:

Classroom Session #1

  • General overview of the rotomolding industry
  • Typical rotomolding products around the world
  • Machine types used in rotomolding
  • Fundamental material properties needed for rotomolding
  • Materials for rotomolding
  • Key polyethylene properties – density and melt index
  • Material additives – UV, color

Classroom Session #2

  • Molding from inside the mold – in-mold videos
  • Bubble formation and removal
  • Mold types and care of molds
  • Cooling methods and their effect on properties

Classroom Session #3

  • Common problems in rotomolding
  • Troubleshooting approaches

Classroom Session #4
