What’s So Bad About Mold?

Mold is a substance you’re likely familiar with. It’s something that can grow on food, but it can grow in your home too. Mold in your house can cause damage to walls, furniture and textiles, but more importantly,  it can be bad for your health.

But what is it about mold that makes it so bad? Read on to find out more about what’s so bad about mold.

What damage can mold cause to your home?

Mold is a term that relates to types of fungus that are unwanted, especially within the home. It needs moisture to form and is typically caused by damp, a leak or excess water. High humidity can also lead to mold.

If left untreated, mold will spread, making it difficult to remove from your walls and ceiling, carpets, furniture and more. You can try treating mold with bleaching agents at first, which might remove it in its early stages, but if you can’t treat the source of the mold, it will soon come back.

What damage can mold do to your health?

While mold can cause damage to your home, there are ways to prevent it, or to stop it from returning. It’s important to tackle a mold outbreak as soon as possible, as mold can also have some serious consequences for your health.

Mold releases allergens, and can release toxins too, the result of which can trigger different reactions in people. Inhaling or touching mold can cause a reaction that ranges from mild to severe,  affecting people’s health in different ways. While some are completely unaffected by it, there are others who can have a severe reaction to mold. Mold can trigger symptoms such as:

  • Coughing

  • Nasal congestion

  • Sneezing

  • Headaches

  • Respiratory infections

  • Wheezing

For those with asthma, allergies or and respiratory conditions, mold can aggravate them, which is why it’s important that sufferers keep their homes free from mold.

What you can do to prevent mold

Mold can cause a lot of problems, but there are ways you can prevent it from growing in your home, including:

  • Deal with any kinds of leaks that could be causing parts of your home to become damp.

  • Use exhaust fans or extractors in rooms where excess moisture could be produced, such as the kitchen and bathroom.

  • If you spot condensation on your windows, dry them immediately.

  • Air your home out when you can by opening windows and doors.

  • Keep on top of your heating and cooling systems.

  • Vacuum your home regularly.

  • Move furniture away from walls to encourage air to circulate.

There are a lot of steps that can be taken to prevent mold that will become a habit over time. Should you encounter mold, however, try to clear it away and dry the area, or if you suspect there’s an underlying problem such as a leaky pipe, call out a professional to help.

Mold can be a huge inconvenience, with the possibility of damaging both your home and your health. Get clued up about mold to stop it from taking over your home.

As we began to grow, we understood the need for mold remediation. Anytime you have a water leakage, mold is always an issue and we did not know enough about it back then. We attended classes and became certified professionals in three key areas of mold remediation - mold remediation technology, supervising, and testing.

During the training with mold remediation, the IICRC incorporated training on microbial remediation which is the proper cleaning method of sewage 'contamination’. Since we were removing some of the superbugs such as MRSA and Staph, we decided to educate ourselves even further with Infectious disease control.

After receiving this training, we are now certified to eliminate the infectious disease source from the living space safely.
